Transitions is a central UCL scheme which focusses on pastoral care where second- and third-year students act as mentors for first-year students.
Gradually Transitions becomes Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) where the role of the mentors becomes more concentrated on helping first year students with their work. This also has the advantage that second-year students get to revise their first-year work and develop a number of valuable transferrable skills.
PAL within the department continues into Term 2, but on a more informal basis.
I co-ordinate the PAL provision, although part of the aim of the scheme is that the PAL leaders should organize as much as possible of the work involved.
