General bioinformatics
The EBI provides an excellent Bioinformatics Educational Resource,
2can. This provides:
- An introduction to Bioinformatics
- A summary of databases used in Bioinformatics
- Tutorials on DNA and protein sequence analysis, protein structure
and function, genome and database browsing
- A glossary
- Links to other resources

Text books
There are now many text books on Bioinformatics. These two (the
first of which is the main course book for BIOC0016) are probably the best
for actually learning about Bioinformatics and how things work:
- Orengo, Jones and Thornton (2003), Bioinformatics: Genes, Proteins and
Computers, Bios Scientific Publishers. ISBN: 1859960545
- Lesk (2005), Bioinformatics (2nd Edition), Oxford University press. ISBN:
0199277877
- Zvelebil and Baum (2007), Understanding Bioinformatics,
Garland Publishing. ISBN: 0815340249
The following are good hands-on books which tell you about how to
use tools rather than how they work:
- Claverie and Notredame (2003), Bioinformatics for Dummies,
Wiley. ISBN: 0764516965
- Gibas and Jambeck (2001), Developing Bioinformatics Computer
Skills, O'Reilly. ISBN: 1565926641
- Bergeron (2003), Bioinformatics Computing, Prentice
Hall. ISBN: 0131008250
Tutorials and Guides
These are online tutorials and manuals which help you with advanced
use of some of the online tools.
